Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, son of Late Krusietsü Liezietsu, was born in Kohima on 20th November, 1936. He became the Chief Minister of Nagaland on 22ndFebruary, 2017 after the former Chief Minister, T.R. Zeliang resigned.
He received his early education from Baptist Mission School, Kohima and passed Matriculation Examination from Kohima Govt. High School in 1955 under Guwahati University. He passed Intermediate level in 1960 from St. Edmund’s School, Shillong under Guwahati University and completed his graduation with Economics honours from the same College in 1962. He then passed M.A (Tenyidie) under Ura Academy Academic Qualification Division in 1983.
He served as a UDA in Nagaland Secretariat during the early part of 1962 and then as Assistant Teacher, Baptist English School, Kohima in 1962-63. He was the Founder Head Master of Thinuovicha Memorial School, Kohima during 1963-1967.
He was first elected as MLA, Nagaland Legislative Assembly in February 1969. Since then he was elected eight times to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly during which he served as Minister of State for Education, Minister-Education, Planning & Co-ordination, Urban Development, Higher & Technical Education. He was the Treasurer as well as the
Secretary General of Naga People’s Council from 1978 to 1997.
He became the President, Naga People’s Front from 2005. He was the Chairman, Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) and Political Affairs Committee, NPF from March 2013 till
He is a member of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Red Cross Society of India, Bible Society of India, Ura Dze, Rifle Association of India, Nagaland Bharat Scouts & Guides and Naga People’s Front.
He attended the 35th Parliamentary Seminar, London from 2nd to 21st March, 1986 on the subject “Westminster Parliamentary Practice and Procedure”. He attended “World
Conference on Disaster Reduction” at Kobe, Japan from 18th -22nd January, 2005 sponsored by United Nations Organisation. He also visited South Korean University at
Seoul with official team in November, 2007. He visited Universities and Technical Institution in China with official team in 2010.
Literary Works and Achievements:
He authored four Novels and an Essay, compiled three Poetry books, six adaptations and sixteen history and drama papers. He also compiled the first comprehensive Dictionary
in Tenyidie besides seven translations and other literary works. Through Ura Academy, he introduced Tenyidie in the College level in 1988 and upgraded it to M.A. level in
1997 under Nagaland University.
He was conferred Doctorate in Literature (Honorius Causa) in 2003 by the Nagaland University for Literary contribution to Tenyidie. He received ‘Governor’s Award’ in
2005 for outstanding achievement and contribution in the field of literature. He received ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from International Penguin Publishing House in
2007 for literary publications.
He also received ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from International Association of Education for World Peace jointly instituted by the Confederation of Indian Universities affiliated to United Nations, ECOSOC, UNDPI, UNESCO & UNICEF.
He was the recipient of ‘Silver Elephant Award’ (highest Award in Bharat Scouts & Guides) from the President of India in the year 2012.
He also received from Friendship Forum of India the following certificates: India Gold Award; International Gold Star Award; Bharat Yogyita Award; Human Excellence Award;
Outstanding Award for North East Excellence; Jewel of India Gold Award.
